This programme holds what the association publishes about science, history, and general knowledge: what is known, how it came to be known, and why the full version is almost always more interesting than the shortcut in circulation. It exists for curiosity itself, with no exam waiting at the end, and it speaks as much to an adult who never finished studying as to a pupil who is bored.
The good question is not what we know, it is how we came to know it.
An isolated result is learned and forgotten. The story of how it was found, with its dead ends and the moment somebody thought to measure differently, stays without effort and travels elsewhere: it is a way of reasoning, not one more piece of information.
It is also the best protection against second-hand knowledge. Anyone who knows how a result was established recognizes at once the claim that never followed that road, without needing to be a specialist in the subject.

An observation that does not fit
Almost every discovery starts with a detail that will not settle: a measurement that comes out wrong, an object where it should not be, an explanation that works everywhere except here.
An explanation that can be proved wrong
A hypothesis is only worth something if you can imagine the result that would contradict it. An idea compatible with absolutely everything explains nothing: it is the most useful line between a science and a belief.
A check made by other people
A result holds when people with no stake in it find the same thing, or correct it. Knowledge is not the word of a learned person: it is what survived everyone else’s scrutiny.
Why this field matters
Curiosity is the one engine that does not stop at the school gate
Many adults come out of school feeling they were sorted once and for all: arts or sciences, gifted or not. It is untrue, and it is expensive. Picking a subject back up at thirty or at sixty goes perfectly well, on one condition: that the way in is interesting in itself and there is nothing to pass at the end.
General knowledge is not an ornament either. It is what lets you attach a new piece of information to something you already know, and therefore understand it instead of memorizing it. With nothing to attach it to, information stays an isolated sentence, and an isolated sentence survives neither forgetting nor the first simplified version that comes along.
So this programme keeps to a modest principle: tell what is established, say when something is not, and give each story back the trial and error usually cut out of it. What stays gripping about a discovery is almost always what the summary removed.

- What is established and what is debated are not presented the same way, and the difference is written out plainly.
The last line is the most demanding one on this subject: it means giving up definitive phrasing whenever the state of knowledge does not allow it.
