How to find science content for kids that respects their brain

Good science writing admits what it doesn’t know yet and names its sources. Here are the signs to look for before you hit follow or subscribe.

A video promises the one weird trick that scientists don’t want you to know. A headline announces a miracle cure, a shocking discovery, a secret finally revealed. Before you or your child watches another minute, there’s a simple test worth applying: does this piece tell you what is not yet known? Serious science communication almost always does. The breathless kind almost never does, because admitting a gap in knowledge doesn’t get clicks the way certainty does.

The tell is what it admits, not what it claims

Scientists themselves tend to spend more time discussing what remains uncertain than what is settled, since the settled parts feel obvious to them already, according to the Science Media Centre, a nonprofit resource for science journalists. That habit can look, from the outside, like scientists disagreeing about everything. They’re usually not. They’re doing the opposite of what a miracle headline does: flagging the edges of what is known instead of papering over them. A qualifier such as ’this study suggests’ or ’researchers are not yet certain why’ is not a sign of weak writing. It’s a sign the writer respected the actual state of the evidence enough to say so.

A second, related tell is whether a piece separates what was observed from what it means. ’The mice in this trial lost weight’ is an observation. ’This will cure human obesity’ is an interpretation, and a rushed one at that. Content that respects a reader’s intelligence keeps those two sentences apart, or at least makes clear which is which. Content built to be shared tends to blur them on purpose, because the blur is where the excitement lives.

Naming names instead of hiding behind ’scientists say’

’Scientists say’ and ’a major study found’ are, on their own, empty phrases: which scientists, which study, published where? Reliable science writing names the researchers or the institution and, ideally, the journal, so that anyone curious enough can go check. Vague authority is the opposite of transparency, even when the underlying claim happens to be true. And a good outlet doesn’t rely on a single scientist’s own account of their own results either: real reporting seeks other expert views on a finding rather than repeating one press release word for word, which is exactly how overstated claims spread in the first place.

A source willing to say ’we don’t know yet’ has already told you more than one that claims to know everything.

Matching the format to the age, not the other way around

A ten year old and a curious adult can both be well served by good science content, but rarely by the same piece of it. For younger children, short videos and illustrated explainers from museums and public broadcasters tend to hold attention without oversimplifying to the point of being wrong. For older children and teenagers, a well edited magazine article or a documentary that names its experts on screen does more good than a feed of unsourced clips, because it models what checking a claim actually looks like. The format matters less than who stands behind it: a public institution, a museum, a university, an outlet whose editorial line you can actually name.

A short list beats an endless feed

You don’t need dozens of accounts to follow. A handful of outlets edited by museums, universities, public broadcasters or recognised research institutions, checked once and then trusted, will teach a child more about how science actually works than an endless scroll of clips optimised for a reaction. UNESCO, whose work on science popularization aims to make scientific knowledge ’more open, accessible and inclusive’, points to exactly this kind of editorial backing as part of what builds public trust in science over time. Trust, here, is earned one honest ’we’re not sure yet’ at a time, not one dramatic reveal.

Building that short list takes an afternoon, not a project. Sit with your child and go through what already shows up in their feed: which of it names a person or an institution you could look up, and which of it doesn’t say who made it at all? Keep the first kind. For the second kind, the honest move is usually to look for the equivalent piece from a museum, a public broadcaster or a university instead, and swap it in. The habit that matters isn’t memorising a list of approved outlets. It’s asking the same two or three questions every time something new shows up, until asking them stops feeling like an effort.
