’Why is the sky blue?’: what to do with the questions you can’t answer

A child who asks a hard question has handed you a gift, not a test. Here is why ’I don’t know, let’s find out’ beats a guess every time.

Why is the sky blue? Why doesn’t the moon fall down? Why do onions make you cry? Somewhere around the dinner table or the car ride home, a child asks something you don’t actually know the answer to, and a small, familiar panic sets in. Do you improvise something plausible? Change the subject? Or do you say the four words that solve almost every version of this problem at once: I don’t know, let’s find out.

A question is not a test you can fail

It helps to remember what’s actually happening when a child asks something hard. Young children ask questions constantly, and constantly undersells it: researchers led by Michelle Chouinard, reviewing recordings of children’s everyday speech, found that some children ask questions at a rate of more than one hundred an hour when they’re engaged and talking. That’s not a phase to survive. According to a Frontiers in Psychology review of the research, asking questions is listed by the (US) National Research Council as the very first scientific practice a person can develop, ahead of experimenting, ahead of building models, ahead of drawing conclusions. A child peppering you with ’why’ is not testing your knowledge. They’re doing science.

Which changes what a wrong or invented answer actually costs. A confident guess dressed up as fact teaches, quietly, that questions get answers on demand and that not knowing is something to hide. A shrug and a change of subject teaches that the question wasn’t worth asking. Neither response is dishonest exactly, but neither is true to what’s actually going on in your head at that moment, which is: I don’t know either, and that’s fine.

Modelling not knowing, out loud

Saying ’I don’t know’ where a child can hear it is not a weakness to manage. The same research review notes that adults who let a child see them not knowing something, and wanting to learn about it, normalise the whole business of admitting a gap and going looking for what fills it. A parent who says ’I actually don’t know why the moon doesn’t fall, let’s look it up together’ is showing exactly the move a child will need for the rest of their life: recognising the edge of what you know, and treating it as a place to go, not a place to hide.

The four best words for a hard question are almost never an answer. They’re an invitation to go and find one.

Where to look changes with the child, not the question

Take the sky, since it’s the classic case. Blue light travels the atmosphere as shorter, choppier waves than red light, and those short waves get scattered around by the tiny molecules of air far more than red light does, a process called Rayleigh scattering, according to the Royal Observatory Greenwich. That’s also why sunsets turn orange and red: by then, sunlight is cutting through so much more atmosphere that most of the blue has already scattered away before it reaches your eyes. A six year old gets the short version: the sky is made of tiny bits of air that like bouncing blue light around more than red. A twelve year old can handle the word ’wavelength’ and a proper diagram. Same fact, different depth, and the trick is picking the depth that fits the child in front of you rather than reciting everything you just read.

A weekly rhythm helps more than trying to solve every question the moment it lands. Keep a small box, an index card, a running note on a phone, wherever the questions that stump you get parked during the week. Then take the list to the library, or to whatever encyclopedia, museum website or nonfiction shelf your family trusts, and go through it together. Some questions get answered in a minute. Some turn into an afternoon. Both outcomes teach the same thing: a hard question isn’t a dead end, it’s a destination with a route to it.

Protecting the right to keep asking

The habit worth protecting isn’t the specific fact about scattered light or falling moons. It’s the right to ask something and get taken seriously, especially once the questions turn into ’is that actually true’ rather than just ’why’. That shift, from wanting an answer to wanting a reliable one, tends to arrive on its own, usually earlier than most adults expect.
