Does a phone lying face down on the desk really matter for homework?

What research on phones and focus actually shows, and rules for homework time that hold without turning every evening into a standoff.

The phone is face down. It’s on silent. Nobody has touched it in ten minutes. Surely, at that point, it isn’t doing anything to the math homework spread out next to it? A team of researchers actually tested that exact question, and the answer complicates the comfortable assumption that an untouched phone is a harmless phone.

The phone you don’t touch still costs you something

In 2017, Adrian Ward and colleagues at the University of Texas at Austin ran a study with nearly 800 smartphone users, published in the Journal of the Association for Consumer Research. Participants sat down to a set of demanding attention and memory tasks with their phone in one of three places: on the desk face down, in a pocket or bag, or in another room entirely. Phone status didn’t matter, on or off, face up or face down made no measurable difference. Location did. People whose phones were in another room significantly outperformed those with the phone on the desk, and performance declined step by step as the phone got closer and easier to reach. The researchers’ explanation is that part of the brain keeps working, quietly, to not pick up the phone, and that effort has a cost even when you never touch it and feel perfectly focused the whole time.

What happens once it actually gets picked up

A separate study, published in 2022 and surveying 525 undergraduates at a large university, measured how often students switched between their phone and academic work, and found it happened roughly three to four times during a single hour-long class or study session. That switching had a small but statistically significant negative link with GPA. Worth noting: the same study found no such link, positive or negative, for using a phone as a study tool itself, setting alarms, taking notes, timing a session. The problem the data points to isn’t the device. It’s the back-and-forth.

The cost isn’t the phone. It’s the small tax of constantly deciding not to look at it.

Two honest caveats belong here. The GPA link in the 2022 study was small, a correlation, not a controlled experiment proving the phone caused the lower grade: plenty of other things separate a student who checks their phone constantly from one who doesn’t. And the brain drain effect from the Texas study was measured on lab tasks built to demand full attention, not on every kind of homework a child might do on a Tuesday evening. Neither study is a verdict. Both point in the same direction, and that’s worth something even before the science is settled.

Rules that hold, without a nightly standoff

Both pieces of research point toward the same practical fix, and it isn’t confiscation. It’s distance. A phone in another room removes both the temptation to check it and the quiet mental effort of resisting, at a cost of exactly nothing except a short walk to fetch it later. That’s a very different ask from ’give me your phone’, which tends to feel like a punishment and invites a fight.

Rules built together tend to survive longer than rules handed down. Ask your teenager what distance actually feels manageable to them, and let them help set the length of the work block before the reward check. And the standard worth holding for yourself is the same one you’re asking of them: if your own phone sits face up on the kitchen table through dinner, that’s the model being absorbed, whatever the house rule says on paper.

None of this requires treating the phone as an enemy. It requires treating distance as the actual lever, because that’s what the evidence, however new and still growing, keeps pointing back to.
